Southampton Labour MP Satvir Kaur has welcomed what she calls “real progress” in the UK’s move toward renewable energy, citing new figures from the National Grid showing that 74% of electricity was generated from renewable sources today, with fossil fuels making up just 6.8%.
In a statement shared with constituents on Facebook, Ms Kaur wrote: “Labour’s Clean Energy Mission is working! This is the energy mix as reported by the National Grid today, with a whopping 74% of electricity coming from renewable sources and only 6.8% from fossil fuels. I know that for many residents in Southampton, including me, tackling the climate emergency is an absolute priority. Really reassuring to see the hard work of this government bearing fruit.”
The post attracted immediate reaction on social media. Facebook user Sam Fielder commented: “That’s a pretty pie chart! Any idea when people’s bills will start to come down?”
David Warner was even less convinced, posting: “What a load of bollox. Profits are the only goal of corporations. Higher bills more profits.”
As the city continues to grapple with the rising cost of living, the MP’s announcement has sparked fresh debate over when, or if, the benefits of cleaner energy will be felt in residents’ wallets with many experiencing the highest cost of living in the lifetime. But for some environmental issues outweighs the higher costs.
